Fighting for a Balanced Budget Amendment

Sep 30, 2011 Issues: Budget

Rep. Garrett addresses the need
for a balanced budget amendment.

With our national debt now topping $15 trillion and unbridled entitlement spending consuming more than half our annual budget, the day of reckoning has arrived.  It’s time for Washington take serious the fiscal crisis barreling down on us by taking immediate steps to reverse our country’s race towards bankruptcy.

For more than a year, Congress has been engaged in a lively debate on the need to cut federal spending.  While I’m proud of the steps we’ve taken to curb our country’s addiction to spending, I recognize there is a lot more work left to be done.  Once we get spending under control in Washington, we need to ensure we keep it under control, which is why I fully support a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution.

Starting next week, deliberation of a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution will take center stage in Congress.  As was the case during consideration of a debt limit increase, I will be keeping my constituents up to date on the latest developments surrounding the debate over a balanced budget amendment on my Facebook page.  Therefore, to stay up to speed with all of the proceedings, I encourage you to follow me on Facebook.  I look forward to what will certainly be a vigorous debate in Washington this fall as we consider a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Thank you and God bless.

Sincerely,

Scott Garrett
